UAL Performing and Production Arts : Unit 3 - Introduction to Professional Practice

The world of performing arts has a variety of roles within it, such as: Actor/Actress Prop maker Audio/Music Technician  Choreographer Set designer Make up artist Director Producer D.O.P (Director of photography) Costume designer Casting director In order to work as an actor my career path will directed to drama schools after college, such as Lamda, drama centre London etc, I have applied to numerous acting websites such as Backstage which is really good for auditions, I've applied for a male role in a short movie about male teenagers from Africa, hopefully i get the role. “What are the Health and Safety aspects involved with the voice for an actor?” Being an actor means having full control not only of your body, but also your vocal chords. Actors who have great potential must learn to command attention or power through their voice. They must understand how to control their voice and they must take care of this vital acting tool The voice is the most im...

the cherry orchad

On Monday me and my group sat down and just read through the first scene in order to get used to the script and the language of it etc. On Tuesday my group had a session with Sharon, where we went of into groups and then we wrote down things we know about the play so far. So far I've found that in the play there is a big family and because of that this causes a lot of arguments and altercations, they also blame each other for things which shows that they don't really have individual responsibility. The main themes of the play are: money love drama Characterisation within chekov is mainly about discussion on the rehearsal floor about who is saying that and why your saying that, and that is why it is essential to really understand your character which results in a good performance. In the first scene my character lopahin was supposedly waiting to go and meet the rest of the family at the train station but he fell asleep,he was then woken up by the housemaid Duny...

papatango scripts

Sharon put us all into groups of four and I was working with Diamond, Favour, and Anakin. We decided to call ourselves the GY actors. We took inspiration from the drama series The Breakfast Club which is about a group of students who are apart of a school club and at first they don't know each other that well but at the end they all become close friends. In our piece there are 4 characters. Ruby-who is played by Diamond. Ruby is a councillor who helps children through any situation they are going through whether its at home or at school. She also has a slight drug addiction. Marqees-who is played by me. Marqees is a young boy who is obsessed with trying to make money and get girls, he is also known to be very cocky and confident. Marqees is actually quite insecure about himself as he didn't grow up with the same privileges as everyone else as he was neglected by his parents, this is why he feels like he must make money. Athena-who is played by Favour. Athena is a ...

script work

Rob gave us all partners and groups to work in. He gave us the following scripts: Trojan woman, and Antigone. I was given Trojan woman and I was working with Favour. We were giving 2 weeks to learn all of our lines and have everything perfected for our assessment, the Friday before the assessment Rob wanted to see our pieces. Me and Favour showed our piece first and we were given this feedback, 'you need to be off script', 'learn not to walk around too much be comfortable in the position you are in', and 'learn how to pronounce the names of your characters.'

speech and voice

Our third lesson was all about speech and the use of our voices. Articulation-the formation of clear and distinct sounds in speech. In our lesson we tried different warm ups which help with articulation. the 1st warm up consisted of us humming whilst our mouths were closed, after 5 seconds we would open our mouths and let out the sound, we also would hum and chew at the same time. This was very helpful to all of us as actors as it helps our voices become less groggy as it was early in the morning. We then started to focus on produce sound from the bottom of our lungs (diaphragm), so we put our hands on the top of our bellies and performed this same activity from before. We then lied down on the floor and performed a warm up were you breathe in through the nose and then exhale however whilst exhaling we would let out a hum, this helped us actors all relax and also teach us not to force out the sounds we make and that it should feel natural to do it. After those warm ups we ...

First lesson

In our first lesson we got into groups, and in those groups we discussed about skills you should have as a performer such as: Confidence Awareness (on stage) Collaboration when it comes to group work Discipline Listening as acting mainly consists of listening and not just speaking Enjoying what you actually do as its not fun when your not interested  Clear, loud voice Observation; this is essential as it can help with character development  We also discussed fears that some people might have or might develop and how to overcome them Personal habits can get in the way of acting e.g nail biting can affect the role of a character as it is not a personal trait. The solution for this is to study the character they're playing to gain knowledge of what they do,how they speak etc. This will familiarise themselves ewith their character. Having stage fright could drastically affect an actors peformance as it brings the level of acting down. The solutions for this is are...
