Unit 11 draft
Does it matter what role you play whether your're not from that race/culture?
First of all the performing arts world is very diverse and consists of different talent from
All over the world, from America, to Asia, Africa and many other countries. However within the film industry Roles are often given to actors/actresses who fit the character criteria this is a very important part of the process, however one of the main points in the criteria are often race, culture, ethnicity or background.
Due to this some actors/actresses are often restricted from being able to perform that certain role just because of their ethnicity or background even though they have everything else the director is looking for. Due to some of these restrictions certain ethnicities are often casted only for specific roles e.g people of colour are sometimes normally casted as the character who has a bad history or upbringing,
Bruce nash who is an American tv producer who has spent years gathering a database of 160,000 acting credits and 26,000 major US movie release, a list of every ‘gang member’ role was selected
And every cv of the actor that played that role turned out to be black men.-By

However their is a new way of casting called conscious casting which consists of the director casting whatever race/ethnicity to a role because everyone is an actor/actress and colour doesn’t matter.
However this can cause controversy as it wouldn’t be ‘right’ to have a white man play a role which is specifically made for a person of colour or vice versa. Possible reasons for this could be because it isn’t historically correct which would lead the play/movie in a different direction, it also simple could be the preference of the casting director, the setting/area the production is set in, and like I said before the criteria of the character.
